On September 29, 2014, the Helmholtz-Alberta Initiative (HAI) hosted its 4th Science Forum in the Energy and the Environment research program (HAI-E&E) within the framework of the 5th Annual Meeting of the initiative at the Chateau Lacombe Hotel in Edmonton.

The event provided the opportunity for students and postdoctoral fellows to showcase the progress made or, in the case of the German students, to present the final results of their research projects to the HAI community and other stakeholders from industry and government organisations. In total, 24 oral and over 60 poster contributions related to HAI research themes in geothermal energy, reclamation and landscape development, bitumen and lignite upgrading, carbon storage, risk assessment and remediation approach and CO2-separation and gas purification were presented.

As part of the annual event, a student development day for both UAlberta-based and German HAI students was organized for the first time to equip the young scientists with additional skills in networking, public speaking and job interview techniques.
