Sustainability Approach

The Helmholtz-Alberta Initiative follows a multidisciplinary conceptual research approach closely integrating basic and applied research for sustainable development. All current and future research activities of the Helmholtz-Alberta Initiative in the research area Energy&Environment prior to their start have an independent review process to go through separately investigating the sustainability aspects of the projects before beginning their procedure. Within the frame of the evaluation process, the conformity of the sustainability principles applicable to these areas is checked on the basis of a previously determined catalogue of criteria by independent consultants involved in the respective projects. This procedure ensures that the criteria of sustainability are adhered to and that a significant contribution to improving the sustainability performance can be made by the research as part of the Initiative.
