Research Themes (2015-2020)

During the 5th Annual Meeting of the Helmholtz-Alberta Initiative (HAI) on September 29 and 30, 2014, in Edmonton and exactly five years after its initial signing, the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Alberta and the Helmholtz Association on the development and intensification of mutual and reciprocal cooperation was renewed for a further five-year term by Dr. Rolf Zettl (Managing Director of the Helmholtz Association) and Dr. Lorne Babiuk (Vice-President Research at the University of Alberta).

Since the renewal of the MoU, researchers from the UAlberta and Helmholtz Centers along with representatives from industry and the Government of Alberta have discussed research focus areas for HAI-E&E Phase 2. From these exchanges, the following research focus areas were identified:

Energy Systems, Processes and Materials

Energy System Assessment

Fuels Processes

Materials for Energy and Environmental Technologies

Geothermal Energy

CO2 Storage and Use

Unconventional Shale Development

Landscape Development

Assessment of Ecological Impacts of Toxicant Emission
