Identification and Characterization of the mechanism of action of Natural Products active against HCV and a variety of human viruses

In collaborative studies involving German and Albertan groups, the HAI-IDR has characterized the antiviral mechanisms of a natural product in green tea, “EGCG”. Surprisingly, EGCG was found to be active against the earliest stage in infection not just of HCV but also of the vast majority of human pathogenic viruses, including HCV, HSV-1, HSV-2, and influenza virus. The potential to develop broad-spectrum antivirals that inhibit viral attachment is being evaluated.
