Novel innate immunity response protective against HCV
The studies of natural products active against HCV have expanded into lipid hormones. In another collaboration between German and Albertan groups, the HAI-IDR identified a lipid hormone, 25 hydroxycholesterol, as an innate immune response defense against HCV. These studies open the possibility of developing synthetic lipids with this protective antiviral activity. They have also identified a novel immune mechanism that may be modulated by vaccines to maximize protection against HCV.
